Cultural Geography

Today in class we talked about cultural geography.  Here are the notes I wrote from the PowerPoint that Mr. Schick showed us:

Cultural Geography

  • Cultural characteristics are parts of groups in everyday life.  These are the ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members.  These same characteristics can also link or divide a region.
  • Examples of cultural characteristics would be language, religion, and ethnic heritage.
Mr. Schick explained to us in Alabama how they have many things in common, but when it comes to college football, there is always a feud.  College football is huge in Alabama.  That is something that can divide a region.  Mr. Schick also talked about the examples I mentioned above, but mostly religion.  He asked us all to raise our hands if we would consider ourselves Catholic or Christian.  To everyone that raised their hands, he asked us to raise our hands if we got baptized when we were a baby.  When some of us raised our hands, right away he told us that we were already learning that from our parents.  We also talked a little bit about language, and some people said that they can speak a different language, and they do sometimes in their house.
